Luxuriating in Nature at KABN, Loch Fyne
On the shores of a Scottish Loch: two architect-designed cabins where Scandinavian cool meets Japanese minimalism.
Drive down a country lane, past the farmyard, then—tucked against the shore of Loch Fyne—two architect-designed cabins reveal themselves. No signage until the final turn. Secluded, yet the journey from Glasgow takes less than an hour.
I stayed in Teru Kabn, clad in charred larch, where floor-to-ceiling windows capture the changing light and frame the loch like a living painting. The design is Scandinavian cool meeting Japanese minimalism: clean lines, natural materials, nothing extraneous. This is luxury with restraint—a world away from the rustic bothies I've stayed in before.
Inside: a matte black kitchen stocked with organic oils and spices. A black Le Creuset kettle on the hob. A serene bedroom with vegan down duvet. An ensuite with rainfall shower and naturally derived toiletries. High-spec, minimalist, precise. Think boutique hotel lifted onto the shores of a tranquil Scottish loch.
The books on the shelf—Hygge, Zen—offer clues to why people stay. The guestbook confirms it: to press pause, wild swimming, yoga, walks down leafy lanes, to immerse in nature without forfeiting comfort. KABN offer a wild cooking experience with Michelin-trained chef William Hamer on the nearby Ardkinglas Estate.
I sat with my morning coffee by the lapping water. That was enough.
I should say that my coffee was made with the cabin's hand-grinder and V60 pour-over coffee dripper, and I sat by the shore of the loch on a HAY Palissade chair.
At KABN, these details matter; it's a place for slow living and for noticing—the reflections of silver birches in the floor-to-ceiling windows, the seals playing in the loch, the shifts in the weather, and the red squirrels rustling leaves as they bury nuts for winter.
The ethos behind KABN is that minimalist aesthetics provide mental clarity—space to reset, reconnect, notice. It reminded me of shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing: mindfulness in a natural atmosphere.
I left ready to meet the next quiet corner of Scotland’s northwest, carrying the loch’s hush with me.
My stay was provided on a complimentary basis. All opinions are my own.
PRACTICALITIES
I stayed at kabncompany.com which has 2 luxury cabins available on the shores of Loch Fyne, in Argyll. A 1-hour drive from Glasgow Airport and 2 hours from Edinburgh Airport.
